Many of these manuals are still in the process of being updated and some of the information is over 10 years old, so keep watching for further updates! This is an exciting new process to move everything into a wiki format.

In the past the tradition in our office is to spend weeks editing a document, especially a manual. Now we can post content and make changes as we need to. Because of the work involved many of our manuals hadn't been edited in a while. In addition, over time our program has evolved based on who was in charge. Our goal is to bring the current incarnation of Quest to the forefront and showcase what we are doing.

This is a way to keep the instructor manual a living document for all staff to access and update. Keep your personal manual updated by printing out the sheets you need. This way we all can update the manual easily and save paper!!

What is Quest?
Quest is an outdoor education program at Bloomsburg University. One of our primary goals is to teach students to be leaders, not only on our trips, but in their future careers. Our program is based on the principles of Outward Bound, which include: fitness, recreation, teambuilding, leadership, effective communication/interactive skills, self reliance, curiosity, and a passion for living. Our courses are for university students and people from around the world. We offer day trips and multi-day expeditions in Pennsylvania and around the globe. Activities/trips include: backpacking, kayaking, rafting, cross country skiing, high adventure, ice and rock climbing, teambuilding, mountaineering, and caving.

Quest Mission Statement

  • To teach outdoor skills as a means to promote lifelong fitness, personal challenge, and recreation.
  • To empower individuals to move beyond self imposed limitations.
  • To teach self-reliance, an independent spirit, an unquenchable curiosity, and above all, compassion for all others and all living things.
  • To develop team building, leadership, and effective interaction skills.

Quest Leadership Principles*

As a leadership development program these are the principles that define what we think is effective leadership. All of our programming is meant to educate on and reinforce these principles. Everyone will have strengths and weaknesses within this list. The goal of the Quest leadership model is to fine tune and expand the strengths and improve the challenge areas specific to each person.

1. Be Passionate
2. Have a Servant Mentality
3. Have a Big Picture Mentality
4. Strive for Sound Judgment and Decision Making
5. Be willing to question and be questioned
6. Inspire Others to Act
7. Have Solid Skills and Be Able to Teach Those Skills
8. Act as a Facilitator of Knowledge
9. Be a Mentor to Others
10. Be a Model of Excellence

What does Quest mean to you? We are doing a small research project to find out information about people who get involved with Quest. Over the past 5 years, Quest has given me the opportunity to explore the world and push my own boundaries both mentally and physically. Our unique culture of Quest allows one to create lifelong friendships and memories that last throughout time.

From climbing steep rock faces, paddling down rivers, hiking up narrow icy trials, eating large quantities of food at potlucks, playing for hours on end with a no particular objective in sight, traveling to far off lands in various forms of transportation, and so much more = One Amazing Journey. What story do you have to tell?

Listed below are a few questions that we are using for research. Please fill them out and respond back on the wiki.

dbconlan Quest Alumni Reunion '08/'09 3 Apr 21 2008, 1:31 PM EDT by dbconlan

I think we need a west coast reunion, now that Lish is out here (Walla Walla, WA). Let's meet up and climb or paddle or ski trip in the winter or spring climbing/skiing tour, or just enjoying the fine micorbrews of the west. if you guys are down, just let me know and i will put it together for next winter 08/09 or spring 09.

My thoughts on places:
Mt. Shasta - we can climb mt. shasta, climb across the way at Castle Crags, and paddle the upper sacramentor river which is scenic class III/IV river.

Salt Lake City - ski in the Wasatch, drive to the desert and climb in Moab, Indian Creek, wherever. Paddle as well. mountain biking of course.

Washington - Leavenworth, climb sick granite, long alpine routes in north cascades, paddle fun class III - V water, and bask in the glory of a bavarian village.

Sierras - if i am here, everyone can crash at my place....Spring will unveil great corn skiing (easy tours), climbing in the North/South Lake Tahoe areas, and access to great mountain biking in Reno, Auburn, Downyville areas, great paddling on the Yuba and American drainages. all easy access. we can even head down to the Yosemite, High Sierras area...climbing in Owen River Gorge.

Argentina - Summer Fall 2008 - climb and ski in Northern Patagonia regions.
New Zealand - Fall 2008 - same deal - ski tours and climbing or whatever throughout the South Island.

Grand Canyon of CO trip - Fall 2008, 3 weeks, ~220 miles of splendor.

peace.

Howdy,

I've posted a video on YouTube! Last spring the Quest and Rec Center staff travel to West Virginia for wild adventrues. We had a blast rock climbing, traversing the well-known Nelson Rock Preserve Via Ferreta, camping, caving, and learned how to pogo stick one handed. This semester we are returning for more West Virgina adventure! Don't miss out! Check out the calender for more trip information.
