This is one of the few campgrounds open before April. Very nice campground with facilities. Recommended for new campers
Trip AgendaFriday:
- Arrived at Stony Fork at 6:30 pm
- Set up camp
- Group Cooking: In foil cooked beef, potatoes, carrots, celery, and onions. (emphasize to participants to cook raw meat well!) We ate smores later on
Saturday:
- Departed at 8:00 for Leonard Harrison State Park. Went on the Turkey Path which took us into the canyon. The trail was closed due to ice so we had to use crampons
- Once we made it into the canyon we walked along pine creek trail and then hiked back up the Turkey Path
- 1:00 pm departed for Colton Point State Park where we hiked along Rim Trail (a scenic overlook trail).
- Left at 3:30pm for Bloomsburg
Trip Recommendations1. Bring a PA gazetteer on the trip because there are numerous back roads in the area. Avoid using map quest or google map directions because of the back roads.
2. Write a packing list weeks in advance so participants can pick one up when the sign up. Share packing list with office staff. Have a pre trip meeting scheduled weeks in advance
3. Create a budget for a full trip as well as for a smaller trip of 6 participants.
4. Advertise: hang posters 2 months in advance, set it up as a facebook event, and mass email.
5. Make trip only a one night event. Friday to Saturday trip allows participants to still have Sunday for themselves.
6. If your trip is at the end of March, still bring all your winter gear such as crampons and gaitors. We had to use crampons on the Turkey Path trail. The night we camped on March 28 it snowed.
7. May be nice to take a trip to the PA Grand Canyon in October during fall foilage
